I love Canada, I really do. I’ve visited a lot of other countries, and although they’re nice to vacation in, I’m happy to be back in Canada when my vacation is over.
However – I must admit…I don’t get this whole French/Canadian bilingual thing. What irritates me is that the whole country adjusts to make the Frenchies feel more comfortable. We ensure that all labels on everything are translated into French, road signs, official documentation…there’s even requirements for call centers to have a certain number of French speaking people on hand AND we’re forced to learn French from grade 4 to grade 9 with no real usage for it what so ever.
But when in Quebec, none of the road signs are translated into English, I’ve been in situations where the staff at a restaurant or even at a hotel don’t speak any English AND I’ve gotten a speeding ticket there and there was no translation on the ticket what so ever.
So why do we allow the French to so richly preserve their culture and we don’t apply the same rules to everyone else? There’s a massive Chinese population in Canada…so to make things easier for them, why not translate everything into Mandarin as well? Everyone who migrates to Canada is forced to adjust. Learn how to speak and read the language, yet we allow the Frenchies to continue in their ways and accommodate them as well. I get the whole want and desire around preserving a language, traditions and culture – I get it. But I don’t think its fair to make an entire country put in effort to preserve a language, traditions and culture that is alien to most. And if we were to make that effort for anyone, shouldn’t it be the Native Indians – who we robbed of their land anyways? Just a thought…
I have nothing personal again Quebec or anyone who lives in that province – I just think the rest of Canada has accommodated to them way too much. If they want to become their own country, then maybe they should go back to France. If they’re not happy about the rules and regulations that govern the country that they live in, nobody is forcing them to stay…they can go back to where they feel more comfortable.
I have beef with Canada for letting them get their way for so long. For making the rest of the country accommodate their needs and demands to make things more comfortable for them.
